Description:
|
Badwater Basin is the lowest point in North America. It lies at 282 feet below sea level. The site itself is actually made of a small spring-fed pool of water next to the road; however, the accumulated salts of the surrounding basin make it undrinkable, hence the name "Badwater". The wonder of the pool is that it does have animal and plant life, including pickleweed, aquatic insects, and the Badwater Snail.
Contrary to popular belief, the pool is not actually the lowest point of the basin. However, the salt flats are hazardous to traverse (in some cases being only a thin white crust over mud), and the sign at the pool is easiest to see.
Badwater is also the starting point of the Badwater Ultramarathon, which ends high on Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous United States, which lies 85 miles to the west.
