Mount Whitney is the highest point in the contiguous United States at 14,505 feet. It lies 76 miles west of the lowest point in North America, and its western slope lies within the Sequoia National Park. The mountain, with it breathtaking snowcapped peaks and renowned hiking trails, is named after Josiah Whitney the chief geologist of California.
