Description:
|
A large volcanic crater measuring a half-mile in width and 500-777 feet in depth lies at the north tip of the Cottonwood Mountains, and it is named the Ubehebe Crater. Its name means "big basket in the rock" and it is 4-7 thousand years old. Another smaller crater named Little Hebe is considered a spatter cone, but it lies close to the Ubehebe.
To see the Ubehebe, there is a trail from the parking area to the crater's bottom, while another circumnavigates the crater, and a third leads to Little Hebe.
Winds at the rim of the Ubehebe often gust above 50 mph.
