It is the hottest, driest and lowest place in the country, and it lies southeast of the Sierra Nevada range between Nevada and California.
The Badwater Basin is the lowest point in North America at 292 feet below sea level. Surprisingly Mt. Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous United States lies less than 100 miles west of Death Valley.
The hottest temperature recorded in the United States also came from Death Valley on July 10, 1913, at 134 degrees Fahrenheit.
All of these factors have made Death Valley one of the most unique places in the world, and a favorite tour destination for nature enthusiasts. Artist's Palette is located in the Black Mountains. The Palette is noted for having different colors of rock -- red, pink, yellow, green and purple. Dante's View and the Devil's Golf Course are other natural wonders to be found in Death Valley.
Hikers can have fun traversing Mosaic Canyon, Natural Bridge Canyon and Titus Canyon. For respite you can head to Saratoga Springs or Furnace Creek, oases and favorite resort spots in the Valley. Also located in Death Valley is the Ubehebe Crater, Mesquite Sand Dunes, and Racetrack Playa, where rocks move mysteriously across the surface of a seasonally dry lake.
Death Valley is not just all sand and rocks, however. There is a variety of plants and wildflowers after the rains, usually to be found in the months between Mid-February and Mid-April. In Mesquite Springs can be found petroglyphs 2-3 thousand years old. Due to the absence of light pollution and the dry air of the desert, the star vista at night is one of the most breathtaking anywhere, just like everything else in Death Valley.
